Our clients seem to think that a balcony should be a separate space. Often we hear about how frustrated they are because they have a balcony that is only one meter wide, or even less.
Not much can fit in a room that is only one meter wide, but if your room could be one meter wider, that would be great, right?
That’s exactly how you should treat your outdoor space; balcony, terrace or even backyard.
Outdoor space is connected to a room – a bedroom, a kitchen or a living room – as its extension. We found some great projects to show you what we mean.

Connected to a kitchen, the outdoor space, depending on its size, can be used for dining, grill or maybe a herb garden.
Outdoor dining needs good sun shade, especially in summer. If your building doesn’t have good shading solution it is important to think about the time of day you’ll want to use your outdoor space and adapt its function to given conditions. For example, if your balcony is oriented to the west, you’ll be very comfortable during a breakfast, but not as much at dinner time – this depends on climate condition in your town.

Take a moment to look at this genius project. Isn’t this amazing – a kitchen that literally extends to outdoor space. It makes so much sense for places with a warm climate where people often eat and cook outside. Also, see how outdoor space is the extra space for the interior, it is not separate from the house – it is a valuable part of the house.
We were excited to see that something similar can be achieved even in a small apartment.

See how one site-specific, functional and original idea makes a big difference? That’s what interior design is really all about: detecting specific situations and turning them into advantages.
The outdoor part of a living room can be very attractive: a playground for the kids, a place for you to relax or just a bunch of plants in pots to bring the nature into the interior.
Look at these two projects:

One is filled with custom-designed furniture for outdoor activities. The other one is almost empty. Obviously, both are gorgeous.
The key is to create that kind of interaction between indoor and outdoor, to imagine spending time inside and outside, instead of inside or outside.
If a balcony, or a terrace, is a part of your bedroom, it could be a great place for drinking coffee on slow mornings.
Or maybe a cocktail? Cheers!
Elderflower mojito Cocktail
Put the four lime wedges into a glass, then add the sugar and muddle (squish everything together) to release the lime juice.
Put the mint leaves on one hand and clap – this bruises the leaves and releases the aroma. Rub the mint leaves around the rim of the glass and drop them in. Use a spoon to gently push the mint down into the lime juice.
Half fill the glass with crushed ice and pour in the white rum. Stir the mix together until the sugar dissolves.
Top up with crushed ice, carbonated water and elderflower syrup over the mixture. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired.
Garnish with the lime wheel and enjoy!
