How to make a small apartment look bigger?
Not sure that can be done. But how to make a small apartment feel spacious?
Well, that’s a whole other thing.
Now, here’s the harsh truth: just because you live in a small space does not mean you have any less stuff than anyone else.
So the usual scenario is filling up space with closets, cabinets, sofas with storage space, beds with drawers… just to provide as much storage space as possible. But more storage space inventible results with no empty space. While actually, the empty space is what you need.
So let’s see how to do that!
1. Scale to fit
Please, please stop buying oversized furniture. One of the best things about living in the year 2018 is the fact you can find any piece of furniture in any size you need. Embrace that opportunity.
2. Use multifunctional furniture
Finding more functions for a single element is a great way to create an empty looking (read: spacious) home.
For example, we love to use dining chairs as nightstands. Also, we are crazy about the fact a dining table can be used for basically everything.
3. Find smart storage solutions
Yes, even if you live in a small apartment, you have (lots of) clothes, shoes and makeup. And you also have a vacuum cleaner, holiday ornaments, linen, bottles of detergents, maybe an artificial Christmas tree.
Make sure you carefully plan your storage space to avoid numerous cabinets throughout your apartment. If you need a little help, we wrote about storage design and shared our quick tips for closet organization. Also, you can check out Nina’s storage in this post, it is really inspiring.
4. Detach furniture from the floor
This really works. Furniture on high legs – sofas, cabinets, coffee tables, even kitchen cabinets – free up the floor surface and as a result, the room feels more spacious.
Okay, so you’ll lose the possibility of storage space in the sofa or the bed, but for a really good reason.
5. Use light colors
Black is slimming, right? Fashion principles can almost always be applied to interior design.
Daylight and good interior lightning combined with light tones of interior surfaces, help to create airy and bright interior. Remember all those amazing Scandinavian studios? It’s no surprise they almost always feature white and light grey tones (lighten up thanks to huge windows).
You might have noticed we didn’t mention any decorative tips. Like the one “mirrors make the room feel bigger”. The truth is, we’re not sure mirrors work that way.
We love the home decoration, but we truly believe decorations enhance the design – they don’t solve problems. We don’t want to advocate minimalist approach to interior design too much, but in small homes, decorations can easily become a problem.
